Inverting selection
I don't suppose there is any way to select all items *without* a given tag, is there? I have been doing this by copying everything in a collection to a dummy collection, selecting the items with the given tag, then removing them from the collection, but it's not very convenient.
Here's a suggestion for Zotero in the future: if something is possible through clicking and dragging, make it possible some other way (such as right-clicking and selecting a menu option). Copying 500+ items to another collection is a trivial database operation, but it is an enormous drain on the gui. In fact, I haven't been able to do it; I have modified the database directly. (I know I'm not supposed to, but I couldn't see another way.) Similarly with dragging items onto a tag to tag them all. I haven't tried to move more than about 8 at a time, but it takes several minutes. I don't know how much of that is working the gui, but it's hard to believe that it takes that long to update the database.
I really appreciate Zotero, by the way. It seems significantly faster than when I first started using it, and I can actually tab through the fields on an item now, which was a problem before that drove me crazy. (The issue still arises, but I know why: if you have a different tab selected, say the Notes tab, and add a new item, it automatically switches to the Info tab, but without appropriately updating the ui, and I am unable to tab across fields. Clicking on the info field fixes this problem.) I have been slowly filling in my collection, and it is a really handy tool.
Sincerely,
Derek
