First time syncing zotero library with new computer

I just received a new laptop and would like to sync my Zotero library. I have downloaded the standalone version of zotero onto the new laptop but when I attempted to sync my library I received a "conflict resolution" dialog box which requests me to chose either the local object or remote object. I would assume I should chose the "remote object" assuming that refers to my zotero library as it is on my old laptop. But just wanted to make sure before I do any damage to years of research.

Thank you!

If the conflict is just for the Zotero Quick Start Guide — which is all it should be if this is a new installation (and really that item should be excluded from conflict resolution) — it doesn't matter which you choose. Conflicts are specific to the item being shown, so you're not going to overwrite anything else. Zotero also only syncs explicit deletions, so simply syncing an empty library will never overwrite existing data.
  • just piping in to say:
(and really that item should be excluded from conflict resolution)
    yes, please!
  • Great! Thank you!

I'll just say (somewhat off topic) that we shouldn't even be creating that note in the first place. It would be a lot more helpful to create a (skippable) first-run wizard that would guide the user through proper setup in terms of setting up data directory (if sharing with Standalone/Firefox), sync or transferring an existing library from another computer or different software, installing necessary plugins for browser (if using Standalone) or Word/LO (if using Firefox). It could also point the user to the quick start guide at the end. That's at the top of my wish/todo list right now for 5.0 release.
  • That sounds great.
