Problems downloading Safari Connector for Mac

I recently downloaded and installed Zotero for Mac OSX and everything worked well. However, I am now unable to install the connector for Safari. When I download it and try to install it I get the following error message:
"Safari can’t open the file “Zotero_Connector-4.0.21-1-2.safariextz” because the file has moved since you downloaded it."
I use Mac OS X 10.7.5 and Safari 6.1.6, everything is up to date. I also prefer Safari to chrome or firefox so I'd like to resolve this with Safari rather than use something else.

Any ideas how I can fix this?
Thanks!
  • How exactly are you trying to install it?

Assuming you're not doing something unusual, this is probably a Safari problem, so I'm not sure we'll be able to help you, but I'd start by deleting all the Zotero .safariextz files in your Downloads folder and trying again. (From the looks of it, you'll have at least three.) If you're running some sort of third-party security software, also try disabling it.
  • Hmm. I don't have a third party security software and I tried deleting all the Zotero downloads, but I get the same results.
I hit the download button on the main download page and then try and Install it like normal. When it begins to install, I get a broken, inactive Z button next to my address bar. That then disappears when I try to Install it again and then I get this error message "An error occurred while installing the extension “Zotero Connector.” If I try to install is a third time I get the error message described above.
    A mystery...
  • When it begins to install, I get a broken, inactive Z button next to my address bar.
Wait, what do you mean by this? The button will show as inactive if you don't have Zotero Standalone open... That doesn't mean it's not working.
  • (And when troubleshooting, it's important to start by saying what happens at the beginning. Later brokenness — in this case what happened on the third try — is often simply a result of what happened earlier and not helpful for debugging.)
  • Thanks for your help. Yes, I was obviously doing it wrong. Very sorry.
