Zotero won't start, cannot delet zotero.sqlite-journal

Hello everyone,

I use zotero firefox and the Word application. At some point the insertion mask would not give me any suggestions from my literature database anymore, so I restarted the program and my PC.

Now zotero does not start anymore. Error Message "Es gab einen Fehler beim Start von Zotero." (German, in English something like 'There was an error starting Zotero').

I tried to restart my PC and reinstalled the program.

One thing I found suspicious was that the file 'zotero.sqlite-journal' cannot be deleted, renamed, or such.

The console entries are the following:

ReferenceError: dw_locktimer is not defined js.php:1
TypeError: $tree.dw_tree is not a function js.php:1
TypeError: History.getState is not a function _zoterowwwAll.bugly.1404411079.js:4478

Would you please help me?

Many thanks in advance!
Lorenz
  • Have you moved your Zotero library to some non-default location (e.g. Dropbox or a network drive)?
One thing I found suspicious was that the file 'zotero.sqlite-journal' cannot be deleted, renamed, or such.
Are you trying to do this while Firefox is closed? Try immediately after restarting the computer. If you can't modify files in your Zotero data directory, that would be a big reason why Zotero cannot start up. You need to figure out what's preventing you from having full control over those files (e.g. security software, file permissions, malware, etc.)
  • Deleting zotero.sqlite-journal is a good way to corrupt your database. Not sure why you're trying that. zotero.sqlite-journal will be removed automatically by Zotero when things are working properly. If it's not, something is broken on your system.

But otherwise, what Aurimas says: security software, file permissions, malware, or a network share.
  • (And none of those errors you pasted are relevant. Is that all that shows up in the console when you follow the Reporting Startup Errors steps?)
  • That's probably from the web console, not the browser console.
  • Hey guys,

thank you for your fast responses. So, aurimas you're right, the error-specification came from the web console. In the browser console there are no errors though.

The Zotero Standalone error console yields the following:

    Timestamp: 18.09.2014 09:49:37
    Error: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80630002 (NS_ERROR_STORAGE_IOERR) [mozIStorageService.openDatabase]" nsresult: "0x80630002 (NS_ERROR_STORAGE_IOERR)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/db.js :: Zotero.DBConnection.prototype._getDBConnection :: line 1134" data: no]
    Source File: chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/zotero.js
    Line: 820
  • Do you have the Zotero data directory on a network share or in a server-mirrored home directory?
  • Yes, it is on our institute's network directory.

I have gained access again after I moved the data and changed the directory within the Mozilla application.

    Thank you so much!
