"Loading items list..."

Error code: 1271627287

On starting up, only "Loading items list..." appears in the main Zotero pane, even after some time. No tags display in the tags pane.

If a folder containing a smaller subset of items is selected, items display, but other unusual behaviors occur. For instance, after expanding an item to see linked attachments, I must switch to another browser tab and back before the expanded view actually displays. Similarly, the highlight indicating which item is selected only refreshes if, again, I switch to another browser tab and back. The same thing occurs with, e.g., scrolling and sorting--the action happens, but the view is not refreshed unless I page away and then back. (After doing all that, my error code is 951659007).

I've tried checking the database for errors and correcting them, which did not resolve the issue. I've also copied the library files to a new installation of Zotero on a brand new computer and experienced the same problems.

I'd be grateful for any suggestions that anyone can offer.
  • [JavaScript Error: "Localized string not available for pane.items.letter.manyParticipants"]
If you go to about:config in the address bar, what's the value of general.useragent.locale?

In your second report you're getting this repeatedly:
[JavaScript Error: "TypeError: file is undefined" {file: "chrome://zotfile/content/zotfile.js" line: 267}]
    Disable ZotFile.
  • Thanks for your reply, Dan.

In answer to your first query, the value is "en-US."

I've tried disabling ZotFile, and it doesn't seem to affect the behaviors I described (i.e. highlighting, sorting, opening/closing linked attachments all refresh only if I switch to another tab and back again.) (The error code after trying some of the above actions to check is 1814787570.)

I assume you mean without a period? (For technical writing, it's important to quote exactly what you're referring to, nonsensical US punctuation rules notwithstanding.)

We don't usually recommend this, but since this is an awfully strange error, can you try reinstalling Zotero from the download page?
  • Yes, sorry--no period in "en-US".

Reinstalling Zotero didn't seem to change anything--still the same "[JavaScript Error: "Localized string not available for pane.items.letter.manyParticipants"]" error and behaviors.

For what it's worth, I also tried again with the same library files on the new computer and new Firefox/Zotero installation mentioned in my initial post, and got the same error and behaviors. (Report ID: 1992345323)

Does this mean it's likely something within the library contents?
  • Can you install the 4.0 Beta into Firefox and generate a Debug ID for opening your Zotero pane the first time in a Firefox extension? (You can either use the "Enabled after restart" option or access the Zotero preferences from the Firefox Add-ons pane to enable debug output logging before opening the pane.)
  • Thanks, Dan. Debug ID is D339812164.

Does this still happen with Firefox 32?

Oh, yes, apparently — I see one of your error reports is from Fx32.
  • Actually, forget my previous message for the moment. Can you update to the latest version of the 4.0 Beta (4.0.22-beta.r7 or later) and generate another Debug ID? It should provide some additional helpful logging. This does seem to be related to specific data in your library.
  • I've upgraded to Firefox 32 and also updated to 4.0.22-beta.r7+4464e8e, then generated both an error report ID and then, after restarting Firefox again, a debug ID. The report ID is 277408924, debug ID is D1760760277. I hope this is helpful!
  • OK, thanks. This was an issue with letter items with more than 10 recipients. It's now fixed in the latest 4.0 Beta. You can upgrade to that for now and switch back to the main release when 4.0.23 comes out.
  • Thanks, Dan. I've uploaded to the latest 4.0 Beta, and unfortunately, I still seemed to be having the same problem. I then tried eliminating letter items with > 10 recipients (I couldn't actually find any of those, but did remove senders from letters with > 10 senders), and still no luck. I generated report ID 428348748 and debug ID D1852905422, in the event they're helpful to you. Fortunately, I've realized in recent days that Zotero standalone seems to be working fine for me currently, so I'm able to use that for now.
  • Sorry, made a mistake in that fix. The latest version (4.0.23-beta.r2 or higher) should work.
  • It does! Thanks so much for your assistance and persistence--much appreciated!
  • Hi, I seem to have the same problem, but with a twist: I use MLZ. I've updated Firefox (32.0.3), MLZ (version => 4.0.21m475), disabled other plugins as well. The problem started yesterday evening, I didn't add any new items, just cited some items with drag and drop. To my knowledge, my library does not contain any letters to +10 receivers (it does contain some letters with Russian alphabet, though).

How soon could I expect a fix to be incorporated to the MLZ version? I'm trying to get a document sent for comments in the next few days, so I'm thinking about the easiest way to get my citations done. I do need the multilingual data, so using Zotero beta temporarily isn't probably a good option. I can still cite the items with drag and drop (I'm writing in Scrivener ATM) but it is quite tedious to go through the items. If nothing else, maybe I'll add the missing citations with the LibreOffice plugin when I finish the document.
  • @tuomasgreen: Sorry, I hadn't yet integrated Dan's second patch. Try reinstalling and let us know how it goes.
  • Ok, that was quick! It seems to be working again now. Thank you for the fast and kind help.

Excellent. My apologies for jumping the gun on the update, and for the delay in adopting the fix.
