Do I have to delete from 'Unfiled Items' after moving them?

Hello

I've moved some references from Unfiled Items into relevant folders but they are still listed under Unfiled Items.

Do I have to delete them from Unfiled Items after I've moved them or will this delete them entirely? It seems odd that they're still listed as Unfiled after they've been filed. I filed them by dragging and dropping.

no you don't.
Have you tried clicking on a different collection and back to see if Unfiled will update? And the collections are all in your library, right? "Unfiled" is at the library level, so dragging something to a group wouldn't change that status.

Yes. I've even re-started Zotero and the items are listed both in the collections and in Unfiled Items. Is there a way to remove them from Unfiled Items once they've been filed into a collection?

And you're sure they're the same items? Could you test that? E.g. attach a note to the item in one place--does it appear in the other place?

Unfiled Items is like a saved search, so you can't manually add or remove items from it.

There was another report of this, with dragging directly from Unfiled Items to a collection, but it works for me. oneplusone, can you provide a Debug ID for that, assuming it occurs?

Adamsmith - I've tested adding notes after dragging to catalogues and it's definitely the same items.

On further examination, it also appears that most (if not all) of the items listed as unfiled can also be found by searching in my main group library. However, I've tested several of these by adding notes both in the group library and in the Unfiled Items and they are not duplicates - i.e. the notes do not copy across from one to the other.

Even odder is that I've looked in the folders where those items should be and they're not listed, suggesting they are just floating loose in the main group library. Is that the same as being unfiled? And if so, how come the notes don't carry across from one to the other?

Is there a way to tell which folder/catalogue an item is in having searched for it by name? This might alleviate some of my confusion.

That's exactly what unfilled means: not in any collection.

Since notes do not "carry over" you are certainly not looking at the same exact items (could be duplicates). But it also seems to me that you are looking at Unfiled items in your personal library (My Library), but organizing your items in a group library. Items in My Library abd group libraries are always copies, even if you drag them from one library to another. If you want to look at unfilled items in the group library, right-click the library and select Show Unfilled.

If none of this helps, we would probably want to see a screenshot of what you're doing.

Aurimas - thank you, yes, that's what I was doing. I was copying them from a personal library.

The items from the main unfiled folder (which I've now found) are behaving exactly as they should.
