'Zotero standalone is currently unavailable'

Have tried to install it to chrome, but nothing shows up.
What to do? Frustration mounts.
  • Have you installed the Standalone version of Zotero? That's it's own program. You don't install it in a browser. zotero.org/download
  • I've installed the thing into Chrome, that is what it says. But the part that is supposed to show up in the browser to add material into Zotero does not show up.
  • You will want to install Zotero Standalone in addition to the Chrome extension, but the icon should still show up in Chrome without it. See this page https://www.worldcat.org/title/inquiry-into-the-nature-and-causes-of-the-wealth-of-nations/oclc/167332
  • I have done that. Both of those are installed.
  • So there is no icon on the page I linked above? Then go through the applicable steps here https://www.zotero.org/support/troubleshooting_translator_issues
  • Right, so the icon is now seen on a few pages, such as Amazon. But when I try and save it, I can't find it in Zotero. And it keeps on crashing and having to forcequit it. Thinking about giving up because this is just a pain and a hassle...
  • We're happy to help you, but no one's going to do so if you simultaneously threaten to leave. You're obviously experiencing a problem that most people don't experience. If you're willing to patiently work with us to help you sort it out, we will. Otherwise it's not worth anyone's time.

If, in Chrome, under Zotero preferences, it says that "Zotero Standalone is currently unavailable", then Zotero will be saving to your online account. This may not have been clear, but you do need to have Zotero Standalone running/open for Zotero Chrome add-on to save to Zotero Standalone.
And it keeps on crashing and having to forcequit it.
"It" being Chrome/Zotero add-on or Zotero Standalone? What exactly do you mean by crash? An actual error appears and the program closes? Or it freezes up and you force quit? When does this happen? It might be syncing something, which currently may take some time and it could cause Zotero Standalone to freeze up. You would just need to let it finish doing what it's doing (give it 5 mins tops). If it stays frozen for much longer, then there's something not right.
  • Hi Dan and everyone

Thank you for your patience. I do apologise, today has not been a grand day in regards to my relationship to tech and this computer.
  • So there is Zotero standalone, which is different from the Chrome extension which is different from Zotero? And I'm usually this confused by computers, I promise, it is not an act.

If Zotero standalone is the Zotero which needs to be open (the icon on the computer) it has been, but it still says that Zotero stand alone is unavailable.

Zotero as a program (the icon) freezes up and I have to forcequit.
  • This may be helpful to understand different parts of Zotero https://www.zotero.org/support/installation

Does Zotero freeze immediately after opening or after you perform some action?
