date covers more than one year

I am having trouble dealing with how to enter (and obtain desired output when generating bibliography) for items which appeared in a journal issue covering more than one year (e.g. 1998-1999) or a book consisting of multiple volumes published in more than one year. Whether I fill in 1998-99, 1998-99, 1998/1999, or other alternatives, the result in output is never how I want it to be, and the years tend to be presented in reverse order.

How to deal with this and get what I want, namely "(1998-99)" or such?
