add an item by identifier
I am running Zotero Standalone 4.0.21.2, last (re-)downloaded on 6 August, under Windows 7. Google Chrome is my default web browser.
When I attempt to Add Item by Identifier, whether doi or isbn, nothing happens except I see a blue bar scanning left to right. Previously, around last June, it worked fine.
How can I rectify the situation?

aurimasPlease submit an Error Report (if one is available). Also submit a debug log covering the Add by Identifier operation.

WintonbobI can't generate a debug log or id. I get an error message 'error connecting to server: check internet connection'. I use ZoneAlarm firewall and suspect the problem lies there. The software that is being blocked seems to be XULRunner and I've changed settings to allow it but this doesn't work. I'm not sure what to do next. Any advice welcome.

aurimasTry disabling the firewall completely (at least for troubleshooting). If that fixes the issue, you will need to figure out how to prevent ZoneAlarm from blocking Zotero. XULRunner is the framework that Zotero runs on, so having ZoneAlarm not block that is a good start, but it's likely that ZoneAlarm is still blocking something. I'm not sure how much more support we'll be able to provide in terms of ZoneAlarm.

WintonbobThanks. Yes I can get Zotero Add Item to work when ZoneAlarm is (temporarily)disabled. I've had a quick look for other Zotero-related files that may be being blocked but I don't see any. Strangely I don't see Zotero listed. Are there any other file names I should search for? I understand that you can't support ZoneAlarm.

aurimasedited August 7, 2014It's pretty much just zotero.exe (I'm actually a bit surprised that you see XULRunner listed). There's not even a port I can suggest opening up, since it seems to be blocking outgoing connections (perhaps you have all outgoing connections blocked, unless the program is white-listed?). I'm not sure if ZoneAlarm has any sort of useful logging that would tell you more. Maybe someone else here knows more about this, but I would ask on ZoneAlarm forums as well.
