University of Leeds Harvard presentation format

Hello all

I'm having trouble with referencing presentations in the Leeds Harvard format. I'm talking about presentations to a seminar or conference, not papers included in a book of conference proceedings. The university guidelines say they should be referenced like this:

Conference presentation
Family name, INITIAL(S) (of the presenter). Year. Title of the presentation. Title of conference, date of conference, location of conference.
Newton, A.J. and Pullinger, D.J. 2012. Acting on PhD student feedback to create new learning resources. Librarians' Information Literacy Annual Conference, 11 April, Glasgow.

Slides from a conference presentation
Family name, INITIAL(S) (of the presenter). Year. Title of the presentation [PowerPoint presentation]. Title of conference, date of conference, location of conference.
Newton, A.J. and Pullinger, D.J. 2012. Acting on PhD student feedback to create new learning resources [PowerPoint presentation]. Librarians' Information Literacy Annual Conference, 11 April, Glasgow.

Using the presentation category just gave me the name, date and presentation title. (I put the meeting name, date and place in the 'Meeting Name' box, but this didn't show), and I also tried putting powerpoint in the 'Type' box, but this didn't show either.) I tried using the conference paper category, but that doesn't give the format for presentations suggested by the university.

Is there a simple way I can edit the style to sort this out? - i.e. so that it states 'powerpoint presentation' and gives the meeting name, place and date? I'd be really grateful if someone could suggest how to do this. Thanks!
  • Hi all, any suggestions on this? Thanks
  • You can give CSL visual editor a go https://www.zotero.org/support/dev/citation_styles/style_editing_step-by-step If you have some specific questions we'd be happy to answer (we generally do not have the resources to tweak University styles). In this case, I would use presentation as the item type. It seems to fit pretty well with the requirements. You also may find http://aurimasv.github.io/z2csl/typeMap.xml and http://citationstyles.org/documentation/ useful

Hi - and thanks very much for your comments. I'm happy to have a go at editing it (I've made some other changes), but I don't know what I need to add/remove to get the presentation style to work (and my CSL skills are way too basic to work that out!).

At the moment using presentation style I get:
Popplewell, R. 2011. The Changing Nature of Research in NGOs.

What I need is Popplewell, R. 2011. The Changing Nature of Research in NGOs. INTRAC NGO Research Forum, 7th December 2011, Oxford.

Also, the presentation title should be in italics - as indicated at http://library.leeds.ac.uk/skills-referencing-harvard#activate-conference_presentation

I'd really appreciate some info on exactly what I need to do to the CSL style to get the conference name, location and date to show, and to get the italics.
Thanks very much for your help.
  • I the visual editor, under bibliography -> layout -> conditional add another else-if for "speech", then fill it like the other else-if elements.
  • Hi, I'm still stuck on this - sorry but my skills in this editing business are too basic. Any chance someone could give me a copy of the text I need to insert? Or walk me through it in language for dummies...?
