Can't save data from Amazon

Unable to save data from Amazon

Although I can see the blue book icon, clicking on it produces this message box:

"Saving to Research / Dissertation
An error occurred while saving this item. Check Known Translator Issues for more information."

Under Chrome extension Zotero preferences, I see this error:

[JavaScript Error: "Cannot read property 'trim' of null" {file: "eval at <anonymous> (chrome-extension://ekhagklcjbdpajgpjgmbionohlpdbjgc/inject/translate_inject.js:50:9), <anonymous>" line: 172}]

I'm using:

Chrome Version 36.0.1985.125 m

Zotero 4.0.21.2

Windows 7

No Amazon page that I've tried works. This is typical:

I used Zotero perfectly all day yesterday. Today, not with Amazon. (New York Times works fine, though. So does the same book title at Google Books)

  • Should be fixed now. Update your translators in Standalone via Preferences -> General -> Update Now, restart Chrome and try again.

    Out of curiosity, right under where it says "Shop by Department", does it not say "Books" for you?

    No, it no longer says "Shop by Department". I see a line in a larger font that now says "Departments - Fire & Kindle - Prime etc." and below that one that says: "Books - Advanced Search - New Releases - etc."
    Amazon appears to have tweaked the page as well as the process for going to departments.

  • Hmm, I managed to get the new design to appear once, but now it's gone again. It's possible that we will fail to scrape some of the metadata from the page with the new design.
  • Ah. So it could be a test, or they could be slowly moving over.
    I'm continuing to get the new design every time, and the tweaked Zotero is catching everything fine.

    I'm happy.
  • Alas...the same problem is back. And I'm still seeing the apparently new Amazon screen.

  • Aurimas might have an idea, but in case he needs more info, can you actually provide a Debug ID from the connector instead of from Standalone?
  • Better yet, can you right-click the page, select Save As..., choose "Web Page, Complete". This will create an HTML file and a folder of other files. Please ZIP all of this up and email to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread.
  • Also, Dan, what's the error in the report. It can't be the same one.

  • Well...just tried to do that but Zotero was able to get the metadata cleanly this time. So no error. Next time I get an error, I will save Web Page Complete.
    It was again the (apparently) newer Amazon page design.
