Word cite without plugin

Is it possible to use zotero with word without installing the plugin? What I have im mind is something akin to RefWorks, were you can put citations in {{curly braces}} and then format the manuscript when done.

    A related question - does Zotero apply some kind of key, or ID, to each reference which I can then use to refer to the citation from within word, again without using the plugin.

    The first one is less reliable and less flexible, the second may not work with Word (not sure if you can save to ODF from Word). The second one does use Zotero's unique identifier, but it's probably too unwieldy to add by hand.
