Unable to open zotero on firefox

Hi,

I've been experiencing problems opening zotero.
I'm having basically the same problems reported here (https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/34364/databaseupgradeerror-unable-to-open-database/)
but none of these suggestions seem to work.

The error message that appears is:

Database upgrade error

[Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80520015 (NS_ERROR_FILE_ACCESS_DENIED) [mozIStorageConnection.executeSimpleSQL]" nsresult: "0x80520015 (NS_ERROR_FILE_ACCESS_DENIED)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/db.js :: Zotero.DBConnection.prototype.query :: line 149" data: no] [QUERY: DELETE FROM itemTypesCombined] [ERROR: unable to open database file]

Any input would be appreciated.
Thank you.

  • Have you checked the permissions in the Zotero data directory?

Are you running security software, and if so have you tried disabling it?
  • Yes the permissions seem okay.

As for the security software, I don't have permission to disable it as this is an office computer. Is there a way around this?
  • If Zotero can't access the database, it won't work. You'll have to figure out what on your system is interfering with its ability to access the disk.

You can try setting a different data directory location and copying your existing data directory there. (I'd recommend temporarily disabling auto-sync in the Sync pane of the preferences first to avoid accidents.)

If that doesn't help, you can see if you have better luck with Zotero Standalone (though you might want to tell it not to share the existing Zotero for Firefox data directory and instead copy the existing data directory into Standalone's default location, in case your security software prevents other programs from access the Firefox profile as well).
