A useful feature that could probably be easily added to the next version of zotero would be a small number in the corner of the screen indicating the total number of references included in the folder being viewed (whether that's the my library folder or a created folder).

You can see the item count by clicking an item, doing a Select All with Ctrl-A or Cmd-A, and looking in the right pane.
