pdf attachment modification and saving

overview of what I'm trying to do:
(1) attached a pdf to a zotero entry (2) open the pdf via zotero and edit the pdf with highlighting etc (3) save it (4) reopen it from zotero at a later time and continue editing

this is how I tried to do that and it didn't work:

I had a pdf on my hard drive which I attached to a zotero entry.

then I opened the attachment via zotero ("_view file_" button)

the pdf opened in firefox and I edited it a bit (added highlighting)

then I clicked the save button and when the save dialog popped up, I pasted the full path to the zotero copy of the pdf (I got this path by clicking the "_show file_" button in the attachment area of zotero, right next to the "_view file_" button I pressed earlier to open the attachment, then I added the pdf filename after that path). when doing this a dialog popped up saying "this file already exists, you want to overwrite?", I clicked yes.

then I closed the pdf by navigating to another web page.

then I went back to the attachment in zotero and again clicked "_view file_"
the file opened again but it opened without any of the highlighting I had just saved,.... kind of weird.

I tried this a couple times, same result, any ideas? In case anyone's wondering, when I go to zotero's version of the pdf and open it outside of firefox it doesn't have the highlights either.

if this worked, especially with the synching version of zotero (1.5), would be great
  • I just figured out an easy workaround.

in zotero click the "_show file_" button for the attachment, then open the file outside of firefox, edit it, save it, then if you open it via zotero ("_view file_" button) it will show the edited version.

so for some reason (perhaps because zotero 1.5 tries to lock the library files for stability reasons I think) this works while trying to do what I said in the first post doesn't.
