Zotero in firefox stops working and need to be reinstalled every now and then.

I am using the Zotero 4.0.20 standard lone together with the latest firefox (Firefox 29.0.1) plugin.

As the title indicates. My problem is that the firefox plugin works for a while and then stops working. Stop working means, when you visit a paper website, there will be no "Save to Zetero" icons in the address bar. This problem can be solved by reinstalling the firefox plugin and restarting firfox.

So that I have to reinstall Zotero plugin for firefox approximate twice a month, and sometime, once every week. This is really annoying.

Does anyone has the same problem? Can the developers please investigate the issue?
  • This is not normal, of course. Your best bet will be to report the issue when the plugin has stopped recognizing pages that it normally should, and before you reinstall. The developers may ask you for information will be useful in identifying the cause of the problem. Answering on the basis of a general description would just be guesswork, and not likely helpful to you.
  • and _what_ you'd want to report is the information under 11 here:

  • Hi, this weird problem occurs again 1 month after I reinstalled zotero in Firefox:

The firefox plugin works for a while and then stops working.

Now zotero firefox plugin can not show the add to Zotero icon for any journal sites.

I would like to help debug and solve the problem, and please tell me what I should do.

    Thanks.
  • follow the link I post above and carefully run through all the steps as they apply. If 1-10 don't work, post the info required under 11.
  • Reported. Not sure whether the info provided is enough though:

    https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/38197/zotero-in-firefox-stops-working-and-need-to-be-reinstalled-every-now-and-then/

I have never changed my firefox setting.

And the firefox Zotero plugin worked initially for a round a month and then stoped working.

I will have to reinstall firefox Zotero plugin. And it will work for another one month I suppose.

    Really weird problem.

    I am using:

    Zotero 4.0.21.2 stand-alone together with
Firefox (Firefox 30.0, Zotero plugin 4.0.21.5) plugin.

The firefox plugin works for a while and then stops working. Stop working means, when you visit a paper website, there will be no "Save to Zetero" icons in the address bar. This problem can be solved by reinstalling the firefox plugin and restarting firfox.

No paper page works for me now and Just name one page url: http://www.ploscompbiol.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pcbi.1000533

    OS: Windows XP Sp3
  • It's unlikely that reinstalling is actually doing anything. Are you sure it's not just restarting Firefox and/or Standalone that's fixing it?

Does it work in Firefox with Standalone closed?
  • Just add to that, my privacy setting in Firefox is "Never remember history".

I do not think this is the cause of the problem. Because, my Firefox privacy setting has always been "Never remember history", and the Zotero firefox plugin worked for around a month under the same setting ("Never remember history").
  • Dear Dan,

I think you are right. I just tried to close firefox and Zotero standalone and restart them all.

And now zotero firefox plugin works. :)

A surprise. Anyway that half solved my problem. :) Now I only need to restart my Firefox and Zotero every now and then when Zotero stops working. It is still a problem I feel. It would be good if you investigate further.

    Thanks.

I normally do not close my Firefox and Zotero standalone at all. I do not shutdown the computer but only let it hibernate with Firefox and Zotero left open.
