Removing tags with zero items

I don't see how can I remove tags which are not present in any items. There were two tags added by mistake and then I removed them. However, they stay in my list of tags clattering the space. How can I completely remove those?
  • Tags are automatically removed when they are not assigned to any items in the library (unless you have assigned color/key to them). Make sure to empty your trash.
  • Well, apparently, they are not automatically removed. Otherwise I wouldn't see them. Tag is there and it shows (0) items. I did empty trash, to no effect.
  • on the webpage or locally?
  • The webpage version, yes.
  • tags on the web take longer to update. You can try a hard reload of the page—details vary by browser.
  • That's not a problem on my side, I'm quite confident. I did try different browsers from different machines, the tags stay there (for past few days).

And they're gone from your local Zotero client?

Edit: Also, please indicate at least one of the tags in question, as well as the library (personal or group and which group) you are looking at.
  • I don't have a local client, I'm only using the browser version.

If you don't use a local client then I don't think they're ever actually purged right now. That's a background process that the client does. The technical details here are a bit complicated — there are performance reasons why removing a tag from all items doesn't immediately delete it, and background processes are more complicated on the server — but we also don't really design for web-only use at the current time. If you're doing real work in Zotero, we strongly recommend using one of the clients.

(That said, I think the API in theory allows the website to support manual tag deletions similar to the tag selector in the client, but it'd take some UI work — for example, an Edit toggle that switched the tags into a mode where they could be renamed/deleted.)
  • I see, thanks for the info.
