MLA Style and Database Names

Hello,

I am having an issue with Zotero not including the name of the database where I have downloaded an article. I know that this has already been discussed extensively in other threads, but I still can’t figure it out.

I’m running version 4.0.20.2 of Zotero, and I’ve downloaded the latest versions of Modern Language Association 7th edition and Modern Language Association 7th edition (with URL) from the Style Repository.

When I’m citing an article that I’ve gotten from, say JSTOR or Project MUSE, I have the correct information in the URL, Accessed, and Library Catalog fields, but then Zotero will generate an entry like the following:

Hale, Charles A., and Lucrecia Orensanz. “Los mitos políticos de la nación mexicana: el liberalismo y la Revolución.” Historia Mexicana 46.4 (1997): 821–837. Print.

That being said, there are three things I’ve noticed. First, if I have a DOI number, I don’t have this problem at all. The issue there, though, is that repositories like JSTOR and Project MUSE don’t use DOIs. Second, if I delete whatever is in the Pages field, I get the correct entry.

Hale, Charles A., and Lucrecia Orensanz. “Los mitos políticos de la nación mexicana: el liberalismo y la Revolución.” Historia Mexicana 46.4 (1997): n. pag. JSTOR. Web. 14 May 2012.

The issue there, though, is that I need to manually add the page numbers later on. Third, I don’t have this issue if I’m dealing with a different Item Type, like an Enclyclopedia Article or a Book.

Erben, Michael. “Britain: 20th-Century Auto/biography.” Ed. Margaretta Jolly. Encyclopedia of Life Writing: Autobiographical and Biographical Forms London: Routledge, 2001. Credo Reference. Web. 10 Dec. 2012.

Crampton, Jeremy W., and Stuart Elden, eds. Space, Knowledge and Power: Foucault and Geography. Aldershot: Ashgate, 2007. Ebrary. Web. 6 Apr. 2014.

Everything I’ve described holds true for both MLA formats, with or without URLS. Is there something I’m missing here? I know most people, just leave everything as “Print,” but I’d like to resolve the issue if there’s an easy fix.

Many thanks!

  • check the "Include URLs" Box in the Cite--> Styles tab of the Zotero preferences.
That will _not_ actually include the URLs, but it will correctly treat such artices as "Web" and include the database.
  • Thank you, @adamsmith. I kept seeing your instructions to do this in the forum, but I completely missed the check-box in Cite > Styles. Appreciate your help. And I love the Zoteroist. Keep up the good work!

@adamsmith, I have one more question. Is there a way to get Zotero to include the Library Catalogue or Archive field for other sorts of documents when working in MLA format? Like if I have a newspaper clipping from a certain archive, is there a way to go from

Atake. “La libertad de prensa o ¿Qué fue de MLG?” 1969: 14–6. Print.

    to

Atake. “La libertad de prensa o ¿Qué fue de MLG?” 1969: 14–6. Fondo Martín Luis Guzmán. Print.

  • not without editing the style, no.
The various Chicago Manual styles are probably better equipped for archival resources. (The Chicago Manual is also just a better styleguide, so if you can, ditch MLA).
