Zotero folder cannot be find

Installed Zotero for Firefox, registered account, restarted brower.
When I press zotero sign on the upper- right corner, it is written that folder with zotero files cannot be found. What should I do?

    OK, so that means your previously existing Zotero data directory no longer exists. If you moved it, you'll need to choose the new location.
  • I've got the very same problem. I think it has something to do with the encoding, since the error message I get reads that the folder Zotero can't find is located here: "C:\Documents and Settings\Александр\Application Data\Zotero\Zotero\Profiles\********.default\zotero" (the asterisks are not what I get, I have put them here on purpose, just in case). The problem is I don't have a folder that has the name "Александр", and I never have. I do have another though, and it's Cyrillic, but every time I fix the path to the zotero folder, the name of the other folder is automatically changed back to this gibberish once I restart the browser.

    Anyway, while I do believe I have found the problem, I have no way to fix it.
  • Yes, that Cyrillic folder name is likely the issue (I believe this should be fixed in an upcoming Zotero version, but maybe not the very next one). In any case, you can relocate your Zotero data directory to a different path that does not contain Cyrillic letters (or any other non-ascii characters). Simply select a Custom path under Preferences -> Advanced -> Files and Folders, then close Zotero, and copy over (or move, but do keep a backup) the contents of your Zotero data directory (at the above path, but with correct Cyrillic characters) to the new location.
  • Well, that's not as easy as it may seem. If I move the folder, Zotero Standalone just creates another. Every time I moved the Zotero directory from %APPDATA% to a custom destination I failed to prevent it from creating a new profile during the next launch. Doesn't matter what settings I try, nothing seems to work.
  • You have to change the setting in Zotero preferences under the Advanced tab -> Files and Folders first. It's not clear to me whether you are able to get to that setting or not though.
