Style Error: Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association

The existing Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association (JAWMA) style from the style repository uses number as in-line citation. This is different from the instructions from the journal.

The author instructions says:

"References must be formatted according to the reference style listed in the Chicago Manual Guide 16th edition, reference list in author-date style (see pages 792–800) with the following exception—initials should be used for author first names and middle initials. JA&WMA titles may be abbreviated per the BIOSIS Serial Sources style."
and
"In-Text Citations. In text citations should consist of the author’s last name and publication year, separated by a comma. For works with more than three authors, use only the last name of the first author followed by et al."

There are examples in the instructions, which is available at:
http://www.awma.org/publications/journal/submit-a-manuscript (first document under the Formatting and Style Guidelines section)

Can someone help? Thanks in advance!
  • It seems JA&WMA changed the rules in 2012, starting with Volume 62, Number 1, 2012 of JA&WMA. And this is why the existing style for this journal at Zotero is inconsistent with the journal guidelines.

Further, I noticed there is a style called "Taylor & Francis - Chicago Manual of Style (author-date)". However, this style too does not take in to account the exceptions mentioned in the original post - initials should be used for author first names and middle initials.
  • isn't it a little early to get impatient? It's not even 24hs past your first post on a weekend.
I'll look at this when I get a chance, but it may take a couple of days.

I accept that was impatient of me. Sorry about that. I did not realize it has been only a night since I posted it. Guess working round the clock makes it look like it's been a while. Also, this happened close to a deadline and made me jittery. Again, sorry.
  • The style is now fixed. The updated version will appear on the repository within 30mins (check the timestamp). Update your copy of the style by clicking "Update Now" in the General tab of the Zotero preferences.

Styles also update automatically within 24hs for Zotero 4.0+
In an existing document, you may have to switch to a different style and back for the changes to take effect once the style is updated.
Any further problems please let us know & thanks for reporting
  • Adam, thanks! Sorry, I did not get to see your update earlier.

Could you please fix the comma issue as described in journal guidelines:

"In text citations should consist of the author’s last name and publication year, separated by a comma. For works with more than three authors, use only the last name of the first author followed by et al."

Present style does not include a comma between author and date. I am not too worried about the et al rule since published examples in the journal too do not follow it.
  • fixed. Same instructions as above.
  • Thanks, Adam. I've tested the update and it looks fine. To add to your instructions, one could also use "Zotero Refresh" option from the Word plugin to implement the new style in the document. The style must still be first updated.

A somewhat unrelated issue, NOT particular to a style but just a generic issue: When I go from in-text number style to in-text Author-Date style, I notice a problem with the citations at the end of a sentence. With Number style, especially those that have citations as superscripts, the citation is placed after the period that marks the end of the sentence. However, if one switches to Author-Date, the citation must now be placed before the period.

Presently, I am moving the period manually. Any thoughts about this?
  • switching to a different style and back is more reliable than the refresh button, that's why I have that in the instructions.

I don't think there is a good way to automate the different placement of different types of citations. It's certainly not possible at this time, but I don't think we'll try to implement it, so yes, manually moving periods (and frequently spaces) is the best way to go.

Adam (or who ever can do this), could you please update the Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association (JAWMA) style to take care of these two issues?

    1. Remove quotes (") from article/conferencepaper/website titles; basically remove quotes from everywhere. Currently, the style is adding quotes (").

    2. Add an access date tag at the end of webpage entries. A correct use example:
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. 2012. National Emissions Inventory (NEI) air pollutant emissions trends data. http://www.epa.gov/ttnchie1/trends (accessed August 12, 2013).

    Thanks!
    Gurdas
  • I was wondering if someone got to look at the above post regarding removal of quotes and addition of access date?

    Thanks!
  • yes, I just got back from vacations, will take some time to catch up.

Thanks very much! I plan to submit the article for review in about 7-10 days, so if you can get to this in next 5 days, that will be really helpful.
  • adamsmith, any chance of getting around to the corrections in next 1-2 days? Also, could you please post snippets of the relevant part of the code from the old and corrected versions? That might help folks like me learn enough to fix such issues ourselves.
  • Proposed patch is here (should get merged soon): https://github.com/citation-style-language/styles/pull/1081 This might be a bit hard to learn from though, since I restructured the style a tiny bit, so the changes are not straightforward.

Thanks, aurimas! Typically, how long does it take for the style to get updated in the style repository?
  • but we should get this out this weekend. I'm just clarifying something with aurimas, once that's sorted out it'll go live.

    Thanks, Rintze and adamsmith.

I am submitting my paper for internal review in a couple hours and will use the style from the link in Rintze's comment. The paper is expected to be submitted to the journal editor later in the coming week. Thus, in case any further changes are made to the style, I can re-download it.

Highly appreciate the help from each of you.
  • The update seems to be working fine. The " are removed from titles and (accessed ...) is added where necessary.

The only issue I saw is that the style I downloaded has its update date set to 9/27/2012. While the current style on the repository is 6/16/2014. Thus, if I request for an "update styles" in Zotero's General Preferences tab, Zotero overwrites the new, corrected style with the one in the online repository.
  • Actually, @adamsmith pushed out the change to the Zotero Style Repository just now, so if your style updates automatically from now on you should be good to go as well.
  • Thanks! Got it, looks good.
