References in Word Document no Longer Linked to Zotero

I have been noticing that some references in my word (2013) documents are no longer linked into Zotero; they are no longer editable, are no longer highlighted when the cursor reaches them, and if I update the reference in Zotero, it is not refreshed when I attempt to do so. In effect, if I have added new references in a document without noticing that this problem is in the document, all my ibids are no longer updated to reflect the new references.

I have not changed my computer or anything major in a while. I am about to submit my dissertation, and the thought of having to redo all my references is one that I cannot begin to even think about.

Any tips are highly appreciated, and potentially life saving.
  • I don't think there's much we can do for you, unfortunately.
You can check if there are any Zotero field codes for the "dead" citations by pressing alt+F9, but if there are not, I don't think there's any way to connect them back to Zotero except to re-insert them (though that really shouldn't take so long as to freak you out as much as it seems to - I did this for about 100 pages of my dissertation once because i had used a different ref manager and it took me about 2hs.)

As to how this has happened - it's actually relatively hard to do. The only ways I can think of are either if you actually removed field codes with the Zotero add-on or if you intermittently saved the document in a format (like RTF or ODF) that doesn't support fields, or using a software (such as google docs) that doesn't.
  • I think it must be ODF, which I occasionally use. At least now I know.
Many many thanks for that pointer; will make sure to not save docs in ODF anymore.

(FWIW, it is possible to port Zotero citations between .doc(x) and .odt, but you need to have "Bookmarks" selected as the format under "Set Document Preferences". I wouldn't recommend using bookmarks unless you need to do this, though, they're more easily broken/corrupted than Word fields.)
