Ecology Letters Style Error

Hi,
I think I found an error in the style sheet for the journal Ecology Letters. When citing a PhD dissertation in an MS Word document, the reference is rendered in the bibliography without information from the fields for University and location. Recently published papers in this journal include that information so I think it is part of the style. I fixed this manually in my document, but wanted to point it out for others.
Leif
  • Could you point to a recently published paper that cites a PhD dissertation?
  • (can be a gated copy - we have access to the journal).
  • Hi,
Here are two examples. In the first, see the reference to PhD by Hilbun 2009;in the second, to Bollwinkel 1969.
    Thanks!
    Leif

  • Hilbun, N. (2009). Land use and reef ecology in the Bocas del Toro Archipelago, Panama. PhD Dissertation (online only), UMI ProQuest, Ann Arbor. Publication no. 3388768
Bollwinkel, C.W. (1969). A revision of the South American species of Asclepias L. Thesis (PhD). Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL, USA
  • yeah, so that's all over the place. I'll do

Author (Year). Title. Thesis Type, Institution, Place.
  • Coffey, E.E. (2012). Determination of baseline ecological conditions in the humid highlands of Santa Cruz Island, Galápagos, Ecuador. PhD Dissertation. Jesus College, University of Oxford, Oxford.

  • That works for me. There is no guidance on this on the 'for authors' page.
  • Seems like a period after thesis type.
  • So that's two to one for having a period not a comma between Type & Institution. Preferences?
  • I don't have a preference, just want to format according to what the journal requires...
  • The style is now fixed. The updated version will appear on the repository within 30mins (check the timestamp). Update your copy of the style by clicking "Update Now" in the General tab of the Zotero preferences.

Styles also update automatically within 24hs for Zotero 4.0+
In an existing document, you may have to switch to a different style and back for the changes to take effect once the style is updated.
Any further problems please let us know & thanks for reporting
  • Thanks so much!
  • Sorry to bug you again, but the style is now including two instances of the information in the 'Type' field, in the example below, "Ph.D.":

Otterstatter, M.C. (2007). Dynamics of an intestinal pathogen within and between bumble bee hosts (Ph.D.). Ph.D. University of Toronto, Canada.
  • sorry about that. fixed. Same instructions as above.
  • Great, thanks again.
