Code for zero-width space?

Is it possible to insert a zero-width space with special code in CSL? (I'm trying to hide a phantom, placeholder.)

It should be possible. The XML escape value will be:

& #8203 ; (without the space) should work. All special characters can be similarly used with HTML/UTF encoding. Whether they work depends, of course, on the font used in the word processor.
