How to use field "Extra" in customized styles?

Hi,
I work with books written by ancient scholars. The date of their demise is very important information. The current field "Date" is a publishing date and is not applicable. The only option left is to customize an existing citation style I am using (Chicago) that could incorporate the field "extra" in its citations. I would put the date of demise in that field so that the bibliographic output could get sorted according to the date of demise of the respective authors.

I tried the following but it doesn't work:
<bibliography hanging-indent="true" et-al-min="11" et-al-use-first="7" subsequent-author-substitute="———" entry-spacing="0">
<sort>
<key variable="extra"/>
<key variable="title"/>
<key variable="genre"/>
<key variable="issued"/>
</sort>
