APA and "book author" input type

Hello,

There is a problem with "book author" field when using APA citation style and book chapter as the publication type. Apparently this input is not recognized during creating bibliography in MS Word? This input type is quite important in case of chapters of unedited books.

Thanks for any hints.
  • Please be more specific about what you are doing, what you are expecting to happen, and what actually happens. I'm not sure what you mean by "input is not recognized"
  • I meant that the names inserted in Zotero as the "book author" (in case of the "book chapter" publication type you may choose "book author" from the list of available options) are absent in the final bibliography created in MS Word. The "book author" should be positioned similarly as the "book editor" is in case of the edited book.
  • I don't think APA would want you to cite chapters from non-edited books. There is no example of that in the manual. Do you have any documentation of how this should look? I can't just make things up.
  • No, I don't have any documentation. But there are of course non-edited books with chapters or parts (e.g. an epilogue written by other author). How to cope with that then?
  • Ideally I'd use a different citation style - Chicago Manual tells us exactly what to do, for example and APA says that only chapters in edited books should get separate reference entries

    I found this:
Pynchon, T. (2003). Foreword. In G. Orwell, Nineteen eighty-four (pp. vii-xxvi). New York, NY: Penguin.

    Here http://usingsources.fas.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?keyword=k70847&pageid=icb.page363224

which make sense, although it's still only an educated guess. I'll have a look at implementing that, but won't be quick.
  • Yes, this is one of many examples.

Changing citation style is not an option.

I think it is reasonable to implement this possibility then.
  • The style is now fixed. The updated version will appear on the repository within 30mins (check the timestamp). Update your copy of the style by clicking "Update Now" in the General tab of the Zotero preferences.

Styles also update automatically within 24hs for Zotero 4.0+
In an existing document, you may have to switch to a different style and back for the changes to take effect once the style is updated.
Any further problems please let us know.
  • Thank you. It seems to be fine, however, I think there is a problem with translator.

When I set some person as a translator of a book, I got the following:
Agamben, G. (2006). Parodia. In M. Kwaterko (Trans.), G. Agamben, Profanacje (pp. 66-68). Warszawa: Państwowy Instytut Wydawniczy.

Shouldn't the translator be placed after the title:
Agamben, G. (2006). Parodia. In G. Agamben, Profanacje (M. Kwaterko, Trans.; pp. 66-68). Warszawa: Państwowy Instytut Wydawniczy.

The similar case concerns the book chapter; translator goes after the chapter's author (instead of following the book title?):
Poliakov, L. (2010). Wstęp. In L. Poliakov (Ed.), O. Hedemann & A. Rasinska-Bobr (Trans.), Historia antysemityzmu (pp. 3-14). Krakow: Towarzystwo Autorów i Wydawców Prac Naukowych Universitas.
  • The first example should simply not be cited in APA style - as I say above, sections of books by the same author should not have separate entries in the bibliography and on that APA is entirely clear. If the book author were different, I think what we do makes sense - I've never seen a person listed in the parentheses with the page number - that's only for volume, edition, and pages.

For the second example, there's nothing entirely conclusive, but we do have:
Freud, S. (1953). The method of interpreting dreams: An analysis of a specimen dream. In J. Strachey (Ed. & Trans.)...
that's one person, but it'd be odd to list the translator somewhere else if they're different from the editor, so again, I think what we do makes sense.
Beyond that, any discussion would need to be based on the APA manual or direct word from APA editors.
  • In case of the first example the formatting pattern was suggested by a person from the APA Journals. And ok, I made a mistake in this example, as I should use different name for the book author, let's say:
Agamben, G. (2006). Parodia. In F. Lastname, Profanacje (M. Kwaterko, Trans.; pp. 66-68). Warszawa: Państwowy Instytut Wydawniczy.
