Zotero field codes not showing up in Word

I just ran across the Sept 27 (2103) forum on field codes in Word. I am having the same problem on my MAC, where I'm using Word:mac 2011 (14.3.9) version. When I "add a citation", the regular dialogue box appears, I enter the name, and then hit "enter". The citation appears in Word. Normally, the citation appears in a field code. But now, although it appears in the text, there is no field code, only pure text. It is as if I stripped the field codes out, which I did not do. Any ideas?

are you sure that the field codes aren't actually there? You can try either by inserting a bibliography (is the new item included?) or by moving your cursor into the citation and selecting "edit citation" (if you don't get an error message, the field code is there).

Most likely you've just accidentally turned off the Word setting for highlighting fields. You should be able to find that somewhere in the Word options/preferences ("Show field shading/highlights" or something along those lines).
