First sync block and report huge numbers of file to upload

Hi

I am trying to upload my files using Zotero storage - I bought 2gb for this reason. When I try to upload, after a few minutes (maybe 2?) the upload seems to stop (although the thing keeps on spinning). Even if I lieave Zotero on for hours the sync won't progress - rather, it shows that a huge ammount of files are pending (in the order of billions) while I have no more of 1.700 documents in this library (in total they weight around 1.5gb).

I am using Zotero 4.0.17 in Ubuntu 12.04LTS.

I tried also to upload files using a WebDav (Fastmail) but it does not work - the sync stop.

Anyone can have a look at case and help? Thanks a lot!

  • Produce a Debug ID for a sync. Disable auto-sync, enable logging, start sync by clicking the green circular arrow, wait until you think Zotero stops syncing, then submit the log (post the ID here).
  • Hi Aurimas

many thanks. The debug ID is D1096827803

    m.
  • Also this one - D330418526

In the first case the sync stopped, in the second we have the high numbers of files coming up and the infinite spinning.

    Thanks
  • Upgrade to 4.0.19. In previous versions, an intermittent timeout from Amazon during file sync would cause the sync to freeze. Now it should display a proper error message and let you start the sync again.

This is generally only an issue with large initial syncs, and the next major version of Zotero will retry these timeouts automatically.
  • Hi Dan

Thanks. I know this is a silly one... but can you please tell me how to upgrade to 4.0.19 in Ubuntu whithout loosing my current library? I am using Zotero Standalone.

    Thanks heaps
  • It really depends how you installed it to begin with. We distribute tarballs from the download page. If you use a package done by someone else, you'd have to wait for them to update it.

Your existing library won't be affected either way (though you should of course have a backup in general).
  • I believe I used a package - can't remember. Anyway, if I used a packcage, can I uninstall it and re-install with tarball without loosing the library? I guess I should back it up and then re-import it from backup. Is it?
  • Don't reimport anything. You should of course have a regular, automatic backup of all important data (Zotero and otherwise), but simply switching versions won't have any effect on your data.
  • Hi

I have upgrated but I still can't sync. The debug now is D463135287
And the report error is 91396049

    Any clue? Thanks heaps!
  • But that showed you an error, right? That's what I said would happen above. Just start the sync again if it stops, or let it auto-sync on its own in the background as you make changes. You can see how much progress it's making each time by hovering over the blue progress bar.
  • I did that. So you are essentially telling me that I won't be able to sync my whole library, but only to get errors? Do I have to keep on repeating the sync, restarting each time I get an error, and hope that eventually one day everything will be synced? I am not trying to be sarcastic here - just to understand what kind of solution you are proposing... thanks.

As I said above, this is an intermittent timeout from Amazon. Future versions of Zotero will retry such failures automatically, but for now, if you're doing a large initial upload like this, you'll just need to restart the file sync if it fails, or just leave auto-sync on and let it start and stop on its own. (To be clear, this is only a file sync error. If you're getting it then all your library data has already transferred.) And again, you can hover over the blue progress bar to see how much progress it's making each time — I doubt you'd have to do this more than a handful of times unless you have a huge number of files, though it can depend on your internet connection and other factors. If that's not the case, let me know.
  • Ok - thanks! I'll let you know.
