Can I stop Zotero from automatically updating citations?

I'm working with a very large document (over 300 pages with 600 footnotes or so). I'm going back and working on earlier sections and when I add a footnote, it has to update every subsequent footnote to refer to the changes. This takes about 5 minutes per footnote, which you can imagine is pretty frustrating. Is there any way to turn off the auto-update feature of Zotero and turn it on when I complete the section?
  • no, not currently. Best I can suggest is to split up the document.
  • If you're using LibreOffice I might have something for you, but won't work in Word, let me know if that'd be of interest.
  • I'd be interested in this.
  • using LibreOffice (or OpenOffice) but not Word, you can use the ODF Scan:
    http://zotero-odf-scan.github.io/zotero-odf-scan/
essentially what you would do is to scan the document "to markers" - that will replace citations with ODF-scan citation markers, which don't update. You can then either keep inserting new citations with the LibreOffice plugin (those will keep updating while you write), or insert markers from Zotero directly.
When you're done, run the document to the scan again, this time to "to citations".
