wrong page number for Copernicus journals when citing papers from wiley (eg AGU journals)?

Hope this is right place to have this question. I found that, when I tried to use the citation stype of Copernicus journals (for example, biogeosciences or Geoscientific Model Development (GMD)), if I try to cite a paper from AUG journals (Geophysical Research Letters, or Journal of Geographyical Research, might be any paper from http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/), it can not recognize the pages correctly, it always give n/a-n/a as page number.

for example, when I tried to cite the paper here:

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2011GL050582/abstract

the bibliography is like below (not the n/a-n/a):

Cohen, J. L., Furtado, J. C., Barlow, M., Alexeev, V. A. and Cherry, J. E.: Asymmetric seasonal temperature trends, Geophysical Research Letters, 39(4), n/a–n/a, doi:10.1029/2011GL050582, 2012.

I am using zotero 4.0.17.1.
Does anyone else notice this? If this is an issue, then I guess it's
quite prevalent for people working with Geosciences as far as I know because many journals are from these two sources.

thanks a lot for any response!! and thanks to the developers for this great and free tool.
  • the n/a-n/a is in the data export from Wiley (in the bibtex to be specific). IIRC our last take on this was that this needs to get fixed on Wiley's end of things, but we may want to reconsider.
@aurimas - you've been looking at the translator more.

    (The citation style doesn't matter)

As a workaround you'd simply delete the n/a-n/a in Zotero.
  • I don't recall the discussion right now (I'm sure it happened though). Do you remember if the n/a-n/a is consistent? It's trivial for us to remove n/a-n/a on import, but if we have to guess at what is a non-sensical page range....
  • I believe the n/a-n/a is pretty consistent, yes. I'd remove
/n\/a(-n\/a)?/ to be on the safe side. Since some page ranges contain letters, we should be relatively conservative.
  • The problem is if I simply remove the n/a-n/a in zotero, then it will simply skip the page number in the generated bibliography:

    Cohen, J. L., Furtado, J. C., Barlow, M., Alexeev, V. A. and Cherry, J. E.: Asymmetric seasonal temperature trends, Geophysical Research Letters, 39(4),doi:10.1029/2011GL050582, 2012.

In fact the page number is L04705, so I should replace the "n/a-n/a" in the "Pages" attribute in the zotero, then it seems to work:

    Cohen, J. L., Furtado, J. C., Barlow, M., Alexeev, V. A. and Cherry, J. E.: Asymmetric seasonal temperature trends, Geophysical Research Letters, 39(4), L04705, doi:10.1029/2011GL050582, 2012.

The problem is, given my limited scope, I don't know if all the wiely journals have the page number is this form (beginning with letter), if it's the case, then it might be easier for you to treat.

    thanks.
  • @aurimas - do you recall why we're using bibtex? The RIS data actually looks much nicer.

The note in the commit log says
Use BibTeX export instead of EM so that we can get the correct publication date. Fall back to EM if there is no DOI.
but none of our test cases seem to show any differences any more, so this was probably fixed on their end. RIS does look better.

Edit: oops, that's EM. maybe RIS was always better. In which case I'm not sure.
  • I guess there might be titles with mark-up, since Wiley has a lot of chemical journals? But I think the reason was probablz just been a general preference for bibtex at that point in time, because RIS was such an ill-defined mess and our translator not as good as it is now. I think we should switch it (which, for others reading along, would fix the page issue).
  • A translator fix for the page issue is now up. Note that this will only affect newly imported papers - you'll have to fix papers already in your database manually.

Your version of Zotero will automatically update within 24hs, or you can update manually using the "Update Now" button in the "General" tab of the Zotero preferences. If you're using Standalone, restart Zotero and your browser after updating.

Any further problems let us know & thanks for reporting
