documents lost, but on backup -- can they be restored?

Hi all,
I am working with a colleague with an odd problem. A year or so ago, she lost all of the 'external' attachments to her Zotero library. The entries are still in her Zotero, organized. The notes she took using Zotero alone are still attached. But all pdfs, and all notes she attached from Word are gone. She had no attached storage, just the default Zotero storage.

She still has all the items, backed up on her time machine backup. Each item is in it's own folder, making drag&drop restore tedious and time consuming. The folders have names like 2ATHDJE and 2AVCV2IV. We tried the "Add a Folder" option, but could only add items at the item level, not the folder (with that identifier) or the folder which holds all of these.

She's on a Mac, if that matters.

Is there a simple, few-step way to restore these folders/items/documents back into her Zotero library, attached to the bibliographic info that is still in Zotero?
