Citation style not correctly exporting to references

I have had several issues with zotero lately. I've had to redo changes to my citations now four times because for some reason it keeps deleting them. Beyond that, even if everything is in the citation correctly, random citations are using the wrong format when I create my references section. The main example would be using the full journal name when it's supposed to use the journal abbreviation and not including the volume, issue, page number. (I'm using the Journal of Neurotrauma's format) I'm literally at my wit's end and my bosses set a due date for fixing everything as last Friday.

Could you provide an example? As in, a whole citation?
And this is using the Word plugin?
  • I use the word plug in to insert the bibliography.

    Example:

Eisenberg, M.A., Andrea, J., Meehan, W., and Mannix, R. (2013). Time Interval Between Concussions and Symptom Duration. Pediatrics .

Notice it didn't use the journal abbreviation and failed to insert the volume and page numbers even though I've added all of the information every citation and zotero's set to the journal of neurotrauma's format which includes the journal abbreviation, etc.

What's especially weird is that it only does this to random citations, not all of them.
  • Not sure what you mean by journal abbreviation: "Pediactrics", like all one-word titles - isn't abbreviated according to ISO or Index Medicus:

If you insert that same citation in a fresh document, and insert a bibliography, does it print volume and pages?
  • Not for Neurotrauma's style apparently. But it worked perfectly when I put it in a new document. (Genius! Thank you!) My only question is how I can make it work in the current document or if I need to make a new one?

Not sure what you mean here, but J. Neutrotrauma says explicitly to follow pubmed abbreviations ("Abbreviate journal titles in accordance with PubMed/Medline (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/"), which is what I link to.

I'd guess that somehow an old version of the reference is stored in the document and that's what Zotero uses. So if these aren't two many, I'd just delete and re-insert the references that are wrong (make sure you insert them from "My Library" not from "Cited") and try again.
  • I'll have to run it by my bosses. (I'm just a research grunt) They're the one's who said to only use journal abbreviations. The example I gave you only has one copy in the library but I'll try again. My word plug in doesn't have an option besides just "insert bibliography" but I do see an edit bibliography option - is that what you mean?

right, but "Pediatrics" _is_ the abbreviation. Something like "Ped." would be wrong.

right, but Zotero can also store info in the document, so if there was an old version someone used and then deleted that's what would happen.

no, I mean you delete the actual reference - i.e. the number in the text - then re-insert it. When re-inserting it, if you use the regular, quick format dialog (the one with the red bar) and you search for an author, items cited in the document are listed up top.

-The abbreviation I've seen used is J Pediatr. but I'll definitely double check with what they want tomorrow.

-Two questions here, I have two different libraries, my personal one and a shared one. Could this issue arise from their being multiple copies in my personal zotero, even if there is only one correct copy in the shared library (which is should be creating the bibliography from)? And what would you suggest to do to solve the issue if it isn't due to what I just mentioned - delete the trash?

I want to say thank you again, this has been so helpful. I'm not what you would called gifted with computers.
  • "Pediatrics" and "Journal of Pediatrics" are different journals:

Exactly, this could have happened because either you or one of the co-authors inserted a reference from a different (i.e. likely a personal) library. That's why you need to delete and replace the reference (that is the number in the text, every time it occurs - not the actual citation in the bibliography) with the version from the shared library. Emptying the trash won't do anything.
