Z Standalone seems to hang on sync

Hi there -

I have a Zotero standalone library I'm trying to sync across machines. I just upgraded to the 2gb paid storage. The library has about 1500 items in it.

First I tried syncing with full-text. The progress bar went about 10% of the way and then just hung out for 20 minutes in the same place. Mousing over the progress bar showed it was trying to sync 36 * 10^12 MB (!!!!!!) and the number of files remaining to be uploaded hadn't changed so I canceled sync.

I then turned off full text sync and tried again. The MB count and file count was way more reasonable -- it had 300 mb to sync and the files remaining count was rapidly going down. Before the progress bar got past the 20% mark, though, the MB remaining count went back up to this exabytes left to upload and the files remaining stalled out. Screenshot attached:

I have now restarted the sync so I can generate a debug log. Screenshot of that sync in that initial "things look okay" phase:

A screenshot after about 10 minutes when the progress bar has gone forward a bit now we're showing exabytes left to upload:

Shortly after, the sync ended with a Zotero error (red exclamation point icon next to sync button.)
The debug data for this attempt at sync, shortly after above screenshot was taken:

Thanks for any help you can offer.
  • Full-text sync has nothing to do with file syncing, which is all the blue progress bar and tooltip are for — so that huge number is just the result of a connection glitch, and what fixed it was restarting the sync, not changing the full-text setting. This is likely just an intermittent error that can happen with large file syncs. In the future Zotero will be better about retrying automatically, but you can likely get past it just by syncing a bunch of times. You only need to worry about it if you're not seeing any progress in the tooltip between syncs.

Depending on your connection, you might have some luck going to about:config (which you can do from the Advanced pane of the Zotero preferences) and changing extensions.zotero.sync.storage.maxUploads to 1.
  • Thanks for the quick response. I tried setting maxUploads to 1. I'm still getting errors. I've tried syncing at least 7 times in the last 24 hours and have gotten an error every single time. Weird thing, though, is that when I then sync up the zotero on the other computer, it does have the new cites.
  • The sync issue according to your report you posted on Dropbox is limited to file syncing, which happens after data syncing. I'd just keep trying that. The report just reports time-outs, so I'd let it run until it gets to the error and simply try again.
  • Thanks for being so responsive. You all are amazing.
