Retrieval of bibliuographic info from pdf

It seems that all pdf's are not made equal! When trying to retrieve metadata for pdf (using the google scholar search engine) is that data acyually embedded within the pdf as part of the metadata or does the search engine locate the data for the pdf elsewhere? If I am making a pdf, is there a preferred program for pdf creation that will enable zotero to successfully find the bibliographic info?

    Zotero searches for an ISBN or DOI on the first couple of pages of a PDF and otherwise queries google scholar with a couple of phrases from within the document. While it's theoretically possible to embed data in PDFs, there's not much of a standard, so Zotero doesn't even try to look at that.
    Since it's consulting caltalogs like CrossRef and Google Scholar, chances are a PDF you're creating yourself won't be found.
