Endnote X7.0.1 to Zotero 4.0.17 the selected file is not in a supported format

Importing to Zotero didn't work. Here's what I tried.

I have the most recent refman RIS output

I don't think I have file attachments so I skipped that part of the directions

I didn't have figures to convert so I skipped that part
I selected 4 references (just to try import/export)

Endnote library is in My documents\endnote.data\complete library.data\pdf and that's where I saved the file as “Text File (*.txt)” with “RefMan (RIS) Export” as “Output style”.

I closed EndNote.

Opened zotero, Import, and clicked open on the .txt file inside My documents\endnote.data\complete library.data\pdf

A box saying Confirm The selected file is not in a supported format with chocies of ok or view supported formats. No file was imported.

Is it possible that the My documents\endnote.data\complete library.data\pdf needs to be My documents\endnote.data\pdf?

Otherwise, if you could suggest what I've missed, that would be very helpful. thank you!
  • open the file with a text editor and copy&paste the first about 30 lines here.

  • huh - that should just work. Two things:
1.) Please provide a debug ID for trying to import the file:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/debug_output

2.) select and copy the top two entries above, i.e. from TY - THES to

Then in Zotero do "import from Clipboard" - does that work?

Unrelatedly - this wouldn't cause import to fail - check in your RIS file that there are some file links that would roughly take the form:
    L1 - internal-pdf://name-of-file/name-of-file.pdf
Else you won't get any of the Endnote attachments imported.
  • I tried copy and import from clipboard but get the same not supported message.

ok, here is the The Debug ID is D1298620545.

But where would I find the RIS file to check the L1 etc? But these are just bibliographic entries. I have abstracts but no pdfs attached.
  • oh, OK, then nevermind about the L1 links. In that case, it also doesn't matter where the RIS file is.
Try "reset translators" from the advanced tab of the Zotero preferences under "Files and Folders" and try again.

@Dan - anything useful in the debug?
  • Did that -- reset translators and tried both import and import from clipboard.... Still not.

I'm not sure why there's not more in there, if that's really for the file import attempt. Can you restart Zotero and provide a Debug ID for an Import from Clipboard attempt?
  • I copied the lines from above and clicked file import from clipboard.

    Debug ID is D1360281136
  • Perhaps there's some sort of bizarrely simple explanation for all this (?)
  • this is quite odd, it's almost as if you don't have the import translator. Could you check? Find the "translators" folder in your Zotero data directory:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data
does it have a file called RIS.js in it?
  • Data Directory Location was custom (not sure why) and with the custom button checked, there was no data directory. I switched to Use Profile Directory and the data directory came up with the RIS.js file.

Zotero interface also displayed My library for the first time (?).

When I exported/imported, all the references came in without any mishap.

I'm not sure why custom was checked under Data Directory Location but that fixed everything (?).

    thank you!!
  • puzzling indeed, I have no idea how that could have happened, but glad it worked out.
