New User - 2 questions

I am excited that Zotero pulls metadata from PDFs. Now I have 2 questions.

1) It obviously doesn't do this for scanned papers. Is there a way to get Zotero to do it's magic after you've only entered partial data.

2) Storage is limited to 300 mb. I don't need my pdfs stored in the cloud. Is there a way to get Zotero to not sync the actual pdf, which can get quite large? In other words, I only really need to store the reference in the cloud. I'm fine with the pdf being stored on my local drive.

PDF metadata retrieval works by looking for a DOI or an ISBN in the PDF and queries CrossRef and Library of Congress/Open WorldCat respectively. If neither of those are found, it takes chunks of text from the PDF and queries Google Scholar for metadata.

If you have a DOI or an ISBN, you can use the Add Item by Identifier button in Zotero to automagically create a Zotero item and then attach the PDF to it (you can drag the PDF onto the item).

It is not currently possible to fetch/update metadata when only partial entries exist. That feature is planned though.

You can disable attachment syncing via Preferences -> Sync -> File Syncing.

You will also notice that you can use an external file syncing service via WebDAV. That will work for your personal library, but will not work for groups.
