screws up citations

i click new citation
it gives me the red box, but usually also buts firefox behind it
then i put in the new citation and hit return
then it goes crazy and says:

You have modified this citation since Zotero generated it. Do you wantot keep your modifications and prevent any future updates?
Clicking "Yes" will prevent Zotero from updatng this citation if you add additional citations, switch styles, or modify the item to which it referes. Cliing "no" will erase your changes

then regardless of what i do, it starts turning full citations deep in the paper into abbreviated ones

if i hit "force quit" it says there is a zotero integration error

this sucks - any way to fix it?
i am working with a macbook pro and firefox

then regardless of what i do, it starts turning full citations deep in the paper into abbreviated ones
    What exactly does this mean?
if i hit "force quit" it says there is a zotero integration error
At what point are you hitting "force quit"? Are you saying that Zotero becomes unresponsive?

1 - it takes full cites that have all the details - they are in the footnote - and turns them into the kind of cite that only appears after the paper was cited once, so it loses its location and other details

2 - i hit force quit after zotero starts messaging me that "you have modified this citation..." and i realize that it is destroying the citations
  • So we're talking about Chicago Manual of Style (full-note) style? Are you sure you don't have that citation in the paper already?

What version of Zotero do you have? Is this MS Word or LibreOffice? What version? Can you reproduce this behavior in a fresh document? What if you copy the whole contents of the document to a new document?
  • 1- yes i dont have them earlier in the paper and it seems to pick random ones to change, not anywhere near where i am working -- i.e i was trying to add cite #16 and it started to destroy #46 and 45

version 4.0.17.1, ms word, i tried switiching documents and it seemed ok for one citation, then it reverted

    thanks for responding so quickly
  • i tried switiching documents and it seemed ok for one citation, then it reverted
So once you added the second citation, it started messing them up?
  • Can you share that new document you created? Either through Dropbox (or something similar) or email it to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread.

Also, in Firefox, if you go to Firefox Menu -> Add-ons, what version is your Zotero Word for Mac Integration?
  • version 3.5.7

i am sending you the rest via email - thanks lots -
  • OK. We'll see if we can reproduce it with the document you're emailing.

    Last two questions/comments:

You don't have "Zotero Processor Gadget" listed under your Firefox Add-ons, do you?

One last thing that you could try is reinstalling the style from http://www.zotero.org/styles?q=chicago manual of style
  • no processor gadget

i will try the style thing
  • Nvm the above. Looks like I can reproduce what you're seeing. Still looking into it though.
  • style reboot didnt help
  • ok - gotta crash - will take it up in the morning - hope you have some luck with it - thanks so much

OK, so I'm not sure how this happened, but here's my take on this. You were originally entering citations using "Chicago Manual of Style (full note)" and that's what the footnotes look like. However, the document I received has "Chicago Manual of Style (note)" set in the preferences. So now when you enter a new reference, Zotero is converting all (or maybe just some) existing references to the "note" style causing you to lose all of that extra info. You should be able to just change the citation style in the Document preferences back to "Chicago Manual of Style (full note)" and everything should fix itself (let Zotero do it's thing... it takes like 10 seconds).

Edit: One way I can possibly imagine this happening is if you changed the style yourself in Document Preferences and then the conversion was interrupted somehow (either Word/Zotero crashed or you "force quit" it during this process).
  • ok - well that worked - what a relief - thanks so much

the first time it ran it still bounced me to firefox when i hit add citation - it showed the little red box layered on top of firefix, but hasnt done it since - odd?

    well have a lovely night
  • thanks for your help last night - so now it keeps telling me "this file is read only" - it lasts a moment and i can still save, but it is disconcerting - any idea why?
  • that doesn't sound like a Zotero issue. Save as under a different name, open it and try again - that should typically work.
