Won't let me edit citation

When I try to edit some of my citations, I get an error message. It reads, "You must place the cursor in a zotero citation in order to edit it."

I tried downloading updates to see if it would fix the problem. So now I'm running zotero for mac standalone 4.0.16

My Mac is os x 10.7.5, and I'm using a macair.

    Update your Zotero to 4.0.17, though that shouldn't really make any difference for your issue.

    If this is Word, then does pressing Alt+F9 make the citation turn into a bunch of text inside curly braces? (Press it again to toggle back)
