trouble installing zotero for firefox on top of Standalone

I installed zotero for firefox a while ago--no problem. There was a Zotero button that appeared on the lower right of the Firefox browser, as expected. However, someone uninstalled Zotero by mistake. Today, I tried to install it again, but by mistake, installed the standalone version instead. I then tried to install the firefox version but it didn't work. No file was downloaded, I followed the prompts to install the extension, but when the restart option was chosen, the PC did not restart and instead, Firefox automatically opened the download page again. This was repeated many times. I have also tried to install just the extension for firefox by clicking under the Standalone download box-- same results. Did I do something wrong by trying to install the Firefox version on top of the Standalone version? How can I get the Zotero button to appear on the bottom of my Firefox browser window?
  • It doesn't prompt you to restart your computer. It prompts you to restart Firefox, which is all that's necessary and which it sounds like it was doing. So Zotero for Firefox should be installed, but you can check that easily. See here: http://www.zotero.org/support/kb/no_address_bar_icon

Installing Standalone also should have worked, though, unless someone deleted your data as well along with the previous Firefox installation. By default Zotero Standalone will offer to share your existing Zotero data directory by default. See that linked page for more info on how to check if you still have Zotero data at all.
I have also tried to install just the extension for firefox by clicking under the Standalone download box-- same results.
(That's because it's the same thing.)
