Changing citation style overwrites/deletes text in MS Word

When I change the citation style, sometimes several sentences have been deleted from my document. It's always sentences or words immediately preceeding an in-text citation, but otherwise there's no apparent logic as to when and where this happens. What on earth is going on?
  • The reason this would happen if somehow the text preceding the citation has been grouped with the citation. Do you see citations appearing with a grey shade behind them? That should help you avoid this. It's a Word setting (something like "Highlight Fields")
  • That must have been what happened. Thanks for the tip about highlighting fields!
