numbering system in Word bibliography won't synch

In a Word document bibliography, my references show up in correct alphabetical order, but the number sequence is out of order. For example, the numbers go 1-10, then 6-10, 16, 11, 18-20. The references I inserted first (for example 6-10) seem to have a number embedded in the code that I can't get rid of, even when I switch to a citation style that doesn't number the references. I have even tried deleting and re-inserting the problematic references, but that doesn't help. I have synched and refreshed repeatedly. Details: Mac OS 10.8.5, Microsoft Office 2011, Zotero 4.0, Word plug-in (just updated). Document preference is American Phytopathological Society (numeric) but I have the same problem with Chicago Style Manual (author-date) in that those originally numbered references retain their numbers no matter what.
  • Does this work correctly in a new document? I'm not 100% sure I'm following what you mean by

Can you post a screenshot of this (with an author-date style, e.g.) to http://imgur.com/ (or something similar) and link to it here?
  • Ok, I uploaded a screen shot of one page of the biblio at http://i.imgur.com/tA3iDg4.png

I have tried copying and pasting the text with citations into a new document and it does not correct the problem.

never seen this. You've tried deleting and re-inserting the bibliography?
edit: another thing to try might be to click on "Edit Bibliography" and see if you can click "Revert all".
  • Deleting and re-inserting the bibliography did not work, but "Edit Bibliography" and "Revert all" DID work! Hurray! Thank you so much.
  • Just to explain what happened (at least somewhat): When you edit an item in the bibliography, it stops updating. Either you edited an item in the bibliography on purpose or something you did made Zotero believe you did.
