MLZ Zotero file on site is older version!!???

I tried to install a plug in that would do law citations. I had to install an older version of Zotero to make it work, but my data had already been converted to the new version.

Now I get an error message saying that I have an older version which will not work with my current database. Fair enough, but an uninstall and reinstall leads to the same message.

The download tab points to 12, but the file is still named 11.

It is as if the wrong version is downloading from your site. Very strange.

Our IT people tell me there is an inactive link to version 12.

I think it is 4.0.12 versus 4.0.11 actually, but I would have to download again to be sure of the file name.

What gives?

I'm not sure what download tab you're referring to, but the latest version of Zotero Standalone is 4.0.11. The latest version of Zotero for Firefox is 4.0.12. There's no substantive difference, and it's unrelated to your problem.

This sounds like you installed Multilingual Zotero, which isn't distributed or supported by us and breaks database compatibility (and, I believe, warns you of that). You can't go back to the official version of Zotero with the same database (though you can sync from one to the other, I believe).

Edit your original post to add "[MLZ]" to the beginning so that fbennett, the developer of MLZ, sees your post. He might be able to give you more advice.

It does sound as though you installed MLZ, but let's confirm that for starters. What plugin did you install, and from where?
  • My database is saved on the main Zotero site. I do not think it changed as a result of what I did.

Unfortunately, I didn't keep notes concerning exactly what I installed.

I first looked here, but the links were deactivated.

I think I did install from this page:

We have tried to uninstall Zotero multiple times.

The error message keeps telling me to upgrade my version of Zotero.
  • yeah - it's as Dan said. You installed the MLZ version of Zotero, which permanently updates your database.
    You have two choices:
    1. You can re-install the MLZ version of Zotero and fbennett will be happy to work with you on any problems you have. If you work with a lot of legal sources, I'd recommend you do that.

    2. If you do want to revert to regular Zotero, if you have all your data synced, you can just close Firefox, move your entire data folder to a different location, http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data, restart Firefox - your Zotero library will be empty. Sync to re-populate it.
  • MLZ should serve well if you do a lot with legal citations. It is certainly possible to shift back to official Zotero if you prefer.

The steps described by adamsmith will restore the local library in Zotero format. It's the simplest method, but it may take some time for a large library to sync. As an alternative, if you didn't make major changes to the library, you can restore the content you had immediately before the MLZ install by these steps:

    1. Reinstall MLZ
    2. Open gear menu -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Files and Folders -> Show Data Directory to open the Zotero data directory with your operating system's file manager
    3. Keeping the directory open, install Zotero for Firefox.
    4. Still keeping the directory open, close Firefox completely
    5. Rename the file "zotero.sqlite" to something like "zotero.sqlite.mybackup"
    6. Find the most recent backup file, created automatically when Zotero or MLZ upgrades the database (its name will be something like "zotero.sqlite.78.bak" -- ignore files with numbers of 10000 or over), and copy it as "zotero.sqlite"
When you start Firefox again, you should be able to access your previous Zotero data.

(Restoring is simpler if you have a complete backup of the Zotero data directory. Keeping full backups of your data is highly recommended.)
  • Thank you!!! I will try this on Monday with IT help so that I don't screw up.

    Again, Thank you!!!
