Exported as Bookmarks - what is the order of the list ?

I havve exported Zotero as bookmarks
Is it possible to sort them by names ?
I do wonder in what order the bookmarks are listed: perhaps
chronologically ?
I would like to export both notes and bookmarks
Is that possible ?
  • I think they get exported in whatever order you have the items sorted in Zotero, so you should be able to export alphabetical by name by sorting by title in the middle panel.

I can look at notes - do you mean child notes or standalone notes? I don't think the latter will really work, as bookmarks requires a URL.
  • My Library is sorted alphabetically but the exported list of bookmarks has no alphabetic order. I don't know what order it is.
    It is not usable.
I cannot see any notes (Standalone or not)in the list
    It is only bookmarks.
  • what do you need this for? The idea of bookmarks export is to then import them into a browser.
  • As a principle, I like to see the same information in different formats or new arrangements
That is intellectually pleasing and also a way to notice information that you might not notice
  • fair enough, but we don't really write export translators for that purpose, so human readability is not much of a concern. Data exchange formats are for interchange with other software.
    Why not use reports?

There is no sorting applied when exporting items, so they come out in unpredictable order. Possibly by date added, but that doesn't have to be the case

When exporting as Bookmarks, Zotero only exports title and URL. The format does support notes, though we import them as abstract. There are other fields, like date accessed and tags, that we could be exporting too (as well as collections).

In either case, these improvements are at the bottom of the list for both adamsmith and myself, but patches are always welcome.

    AdamSmith recommends the Report function
I could not figure out in what order the list is sorted- it seems that I cannot control that.
Then I saved it as pdf (using Safari on Mac)
It saved in a folder named Storage. I never could find this folder although I searched with Spotify.
  • you can sort reports using Zotero for Firefox, not in Standalone though.
Where a PDF print is saved has nothing to do with Zotero.
  • I use Z for FF. The report comes in a certain order which is not what I want. I want it to be the same as it is sorted in My Library list
  • Did you see http://www.zotero.org/support/reports#sort_order ?
    How is that not sufficient?

    ?sort=itemType
    ?sort=type

    What is the difference?
I tried, it did not return what I expected (i e sorting by type)
I also tried righ clicking on My Library and generate a report
The result is not the order in which the items are shown in the center column.
Z has so many tricks that it is not user friendly - seems more Windows style and not Mac style app ?
  • type is the type field as e.g. Report Type, Thesis Type etc.. itemType is what you want. As noted on that page, reports are sorted by title by default.

You're trying to do a lot of unusual things with Zotero and have very specific ideas of what you want. Devs have built in a significant amount of customizability, but yes, you do need to learn how to use that. I'm pretty sure it's more than you'd get from almost all other comparable software.
