remove attachment from zotero data directory after the reference has been deleted from zotero

Hi,
I have a custom zotero directory for all my pdfs and attachments.
Recently while I was organising my zotero account, I noticed that when I remove a reference from zotero, it doesn't removes the respective attachments (pdfs and all) from the data directory.
This is causing me some space problem as I keep my data directory in dropbox.
Could this feature be possible by some tweaking?
  • Storing your data directory in Dropbox is strongly discouraged, and we can't help you as long as it's there. You're likely to corrupt your database and experience other problems.

If you can reproduce this with your data directory elsewhere, we can take a look. In that case, provide a Debug ID for a deletion from the trash for a single item that doesn't get deleted from disk.
  • Hello Dan,
As you said, I tried removing my reference from a locally kept data storage. I was wrong to say that the file stays. Actually, until I clear the trash folder, the attachment stays in the data directory. It is only when I clear the trash folder that the respective attachment from the data directory is deleted. Debug Id is D672905691.

Regarding the dropbox issue, is there any other way around? Because I have three computers wherein all the references and the respective files have to be stored. If it weren't for dropbox, i'll have to copy and manually sync the data directory between all those computers. As can be envisaged, this will be pretty tiresome.

Sounds like everything is working correctly then. Of course Zotero only deletes the file when you empty the trash.

  • I have seen the zotero sync feature. But presently the space provided with the free account does not suffice my requirements.
Seems I will have to buy some more space in order to use the feature (which I might do sometime in the future).
    Thanks by the way.
  • there is also the WebDAV option, if you look around a little you should be able to find at least 2GB of free WebDAV
  • And if you read the whole page linked above, you will notice that the last paragraph talks about using DropBox as a sync service for _file attachments only_ (not the whole data directory).
