Importing a Word document with linked citations (Refworks)

Ok, I just started using Zotero (it's really cool) and I have been using Refworks. Refworks uses an addin to MS Word that they call "Write-n-Cite". So you can link your bibliography with your text citations. It will then "create" the paper in the determined format/output including the bibliography.

I have yet to try this and ardently attempt to avoid "disasters" before they happen. Any thoughts about this or a "best practice"?

Thanks
  • Zotero, Refworks and Endnote all use different word plugins. You will not be able to get the citations directly out of a word document using Endnote or Refworks plugins. Instead, you will need to export your references from Refworks in an exchange format, something like RIS or BibTeX, and then import them into your Zotero collection.
  • So I would therefore have to re-associate a citation in my document with an imported reference. Correct?

    Thanks

Yes, correct. The reason is that none of these tree applications (Zotero, Refworks, and Endnote) speak each others' languages — they all use different (and incompatible) approaches to maintain a link between the citation and the actual record in your reference database . It is unfortunate, but true.
