Create Bibliography from Collection (and sub-collections)

Hello everyone,

I am working on my PhD thesis, and I have created a Zotero collection for this project. Within this collection I have sub-collections, which is invaluable for me, and also helps me communicate to my supervisor.

Now, however, when it comes to printing a bibliography, I am somewhat stuck, because I can't seem to be able to create a bibliography from a collection and sub-collections. Am I just blind, or is this just not there?

The ideal would be, of course, to have the (option of the) hierarchy still represented in a bibliography as headings, but I'd settle for being able to simply get a biblography without having to iterate through each 'subfolder', copy it to excel (so I can sort it) and then copy over to the document where it's needed. At the moment I'm only pushing a hundred titles, but it's going to get unmanageable pretty soon.

Please note that for this stage of the game, being able to print a 'works cited' from my document is not sufficient as by and large the text isn't written yet.

Appreciate your input.

  • turn on recursive collections:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/preferences/hidden_preferences
then select the collection on the left and select all (ctrl+a) in the middle panel. I believe even with recursive collection turned on, using right-click --> Create bibliography on the collection won't give you all items.
  • adamsmith - Niiiice! I can now toggle recursion on for making my bibliographies, or off for regular use: filing and organising! Super!

    A couple of notes:
*) If one is using standalone Zotero then the instructions on the link are insufficient; the about:config view is instead available under 'preferences->advanced tab' (on OS X that is, but I presume equivalent on other platforms)

*) For the record you are correct that "right-click on the collection 'folder' => Create bibliography" is equivalent to "ctrl-a in the right column => right click on selected items => create bibliography" regardless of recursive collection flag status.

    Thank you very much!

  • while maybe not super-visibly, the page does say:
"In Zotero Standalone you can access about:config from the Advanced pane of the preferences."
    In the first paragraph.
