long time to open Zotero

Hi,

I am using Zotero 4.0.9 standalone version. I have 1280 items in
my library (with attached pdfs). Each parent folder in the library has some subfolders in
the following manner:

My library
Simulations
- Monte Carlo
- Molecular Dynamics
Miscellaneous
- Own papers
- Others
....

I have noticed that the process of starting Zotero takes sometimes
~ 10 seconds. This is not too bad but anyway I have to wait until
Zotero is ready to make a search or show my folders.

About the search box, I have noticed that sometimes when I try to
make a search Zotero stops working for a few seconds and then it
comes back and I am able to finish what I was trying to type.

Now I only have 1280 items but I wanted to download more at least
20000. I wonder if the slowing down of Zotero would get worse if
I have that number of items with attached pdfs.

Regards.
  • Zotero is designed to take longer at startup in order to speed up regular usage, the idea being that it doesn't need to be restarted very often.

If you're using auto-sync and file syncing and have a decent number of file attachments, 4.0.10, which will be out soon, should avoid any hangs of the initial auto-sync or subsequent auto-syncs.

For searching, you can either switch the quick search mode to Title, Creator, Year (if it's not set to that already) or add a " (double quotation marks) to the beginning to keep it from searching until you press Enter. No need for the closing quotes.

It will get slower with 20,000 items, certainly, but plenty of people use Zotero with libraries of that size.
  • Hi,

thanks a lot for the information. I see now what is the idea behind
Zotero: not to open it frequently but just once and leave it running.

In my case, usually I have several windows open and I use Zotero only
when I need to add or search for a reference. My question is, is there
some command line client for Zotero, so that, I can launch Zotero in
a terminal window using Tmux for instance?

    Thanks.
