starting with current dropbox folder and linking to zotero

I currently have a signifcinat PDF library stored in dropbox which I use on multiple devices and change regularly.

I want to use Zotero for managing references and annotations.

I have read some posts about linking folders but these seem related to when you have an existing zotero library/database.

I don't really want files stored on zotero but rather want to be able to mamage my citations from here and add files as I download then from the web.

Can anyone point in the direction to start.

    I'm not sure I understand what you want to do precisely.

    You can manage citations in Zotero regardless of where files are.
    If you want to add citation information for your files on dropbox use "Link to File" under the green plus sign (note that you can select multiple files at once) and then "retrieve metadata" - don't do too many at once lest you'll get locked out by google scholar which Zotero uses for part of the metadata retrieval.
    http://www.zotero.org/support/retrieve_pdf_metadata (ignore the advice on storing PDFs in Zotero via "Store copy" or drag&drop for your purposes).

    If you want to have Zotero move PDFs downloaded with items to Dropbox look at Zotfile:

    And if you use linked files in Dropbox, you'll want to look into using the linked attachment base directory setting.
