There was an error starting Zotero (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, Firefox 22, Zotero 3.011)

Hi everyone,

I think Ubuntu just upgraded my Firefox to 22, and for several days Zotero has not started.

I don't want to manually upgrade to version 4, since I am travelling, and want to make sure that my desktop zotero is well backed up.

Am I likely to risk corruption if I install Zotero 4 standalone?

I've looked through the forums, and found this:
https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/30904/there-was-an-error-starting-zotero/#Item_0

Which suggested:

I have gone through the relevant steps I have seen, and have the following errors in the log:

  • No need to report the error - it's not a Zotero bug, but due to you running an outdated Zotero version which isn't compatible with Firefox 20+

You should be able to install and run Standalone 4.0.9 on the same database. Obviously you won't be able to save any items from Firefox, though.

There's also not particular reason to back-up before this upgrade (beyond the general reasons for backing up) as 4.0.9 doesn't perform a database upgrade - in other words you can downgrade to 3.0.x with the same database if you want/need to for some reason.
