Two (perhaps related) synching problems

Hello,

I am experimenting several problems while synchronising files.

I am using the standalone version on my mac (version 4.0.8); as well as the online version (on Firefox). I subscribe to several groups, and am the owner on two, created using the online version. These are research bibliographies to be accessed by a small groups.

I encounter two problems with the standalone version

The fist problem is that it seems that the new groups do not appear do not appear when I synchronise on the standalone version (including one of the two groups I created on the online version).

The second is that, when synchronising on the standalone version, processing the updated data from sync server, I usually come to a request to solve the an enormous amount of conflicts resolution - currently above 58000.

I have several folders on my library, some of them including the same items as in one of the folders on my group library, but never more than say 4000 items. Looking at the duplicate items in my library, I also noticed a very long list indeed.

Are these problems related? can anybody direct me to a solution?

Many thanks in advance!

  • Syncing is currently all-or-nothing, so if the sync isn't finishing you won't see any new data. So yes, the problems are related.

What kind of conflicts are you seeing? It certainly shouldn't be possible to have tens of thousands of conflicts.

If you don't have too much data that you've modified locally since your last successful sync, your best bet is to use Restore from Zotero Server to overwrite your local library with the online version.

If you have a large amount of data, we'll have to figure out what's causing the conflicts, but that will only help if they're showing up erroneously due to a bug in Zotero.

Once that's resolved, you should set about removing duplicates to reduce the size of your library. (Zotero doesn't create duplicates, but you could have them from multiple failed imports or similar. It's often as easy as sorting your library by Date Added and deleting entire batches of imported items, and then emptying the trash.)
  • Thank you for this suggestion: I'll try the Restore from Zotero server tomorrow morning.
The conflicts are between entries from local and remote objects. I'll try anyway since the online version is ok, and keep you informed.
  • The conflicts are between entries from local and remote objects.
Right, but what kinds of differences are you seeing? It seems unlikely that you actually modified 58,000 items in two different places between syncs.
  • Sorry, my answer wasn't answering the point.
THe differences are minute in fact.
    An example: the first object:
in both version (local and remote), the Date added is the same (13 March 2013); only the modified date is different (local one 2 April, remote one 3 May). The local one has an addition in call number, but that is all. The same pattern can be observed on the following items. I once added, using the online version of Zotero, indication about location. This seem the only differences.
It does not explain why there are so many conflicts.
I do not know if this can help in any way.
    Thanks in any case.
  • I wish to confirm that the restore from Zotero server went well (although it took hours to complete). At least this problem seems to be solved. The duplicate list is still very long (up to six times the same reference); but of course, I have some databases in groups (to share the references, used as a catalog) as well as in my library (to work on it). Maybe should I limit this. May I ask you what are the practical consequences of merging the references? Would they disappear from several databases? Sorry if it looks naive...

    Many thanks for the help.
  • Having items in multiple libraries doesn't cause duplicates. The Duplicate Items views are separate for each library, so if you see six of an item there, you should fix that.

I'm not sure I understand your question regarding merging. Merging is basically equivalent to deleting all but one of the item (and copying the attachments from the deleted items to the remaining one), except it also stores a link behind the scenes so that citations in documents continue to work.
