sync for new installation hangs

Running sync after installing Zotero Standalone on new Windows 8 platform, the "Processing updated data from sync server" message shows and the green bar moves, but the Windows Wi-Fi meter shows that, aside from the occasional packet, no data is actually being sent or received. Eventually hangs and freezes. Repeated several times.
  • P.S. At end, error message is "XULRunner is not responding."
  • How long have you let it go? That currently can happen if Zotero is performing a very large sync, which appears to be the case for you—your copy of Zotero is performing a full download of all items in all libraries.
  • Ten or fifteen minutes each time. Discouraging factors are the absence of any throughput shown in the Wi-Fi meter, the "Zotero is not responding" error message that follows a stall in the green Zotero bar meter, and the XULRunner message. All these factors suggest that nothing is actually happening -- not just that the download is taking time.

You've made five full downloads in the last 15 minutes, each one 17MB (though it would be less over the wire). It's not the download that's taking time—it's the processing. Let it go for longer.

You can run Zotero with real-time debug output to reassure yourself that something is actually happening, but you'll need to force quit it at some point, since on Windows real-time debug output makes things prohibitively slow.
